KSG Ultrasonic Calcaneus Model, KSG-1 Phantom.PDF

It is made of medical-grade polyurethane rubber, and its acoustic properties are highly matched to the human calcaneus. It is specifically designed for the accurate calibration and quality control of the sound velocity (SOS) and broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) measurements of ultrasonic bone density instruments, in accordance with the industry standards of YY/T 0774-2019 and YY/T 0939-2014.

The ultrasonic diagnostic instruments for detecting the acoustic properties of bones (now known as "ultrasonic bone densitometers") are divided into two major categories: those for cancellous bone and those for cortical bone. The most representative and easily detectable part of cancellous bone is the calcaneus. The clinical detection parameters of the calcaneus ultrasonic detector are mostly two in number, namely sound velocity (SOS) and broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA). Currently, the most suitable means for evaluating the accuracy (standard deviation) and precision (repeatability) of calcaneus ultrasonic detection is certain types of polyurethane rubber specimens.

The temperature values displayed by the inspected instrument can be substituted into the given formula to calculate the required SOS and BUA values. For the double-surface wedge-shaped specimen, the provided formula is the fitted equation for the relationship between SOS, BUA and temperature measured between the two planes at the root.

Key Technical Parameters:
Material: Polyurethane rubber (acoustic properties match the calcaneus, uniform density, size tolerance ±0.1mm)
Sound velocity range: 1400–1700 m/s (close to that of the human calcaneus)
Attenuation range: 0–20 dB/(cm·MHz)
Frequency adaptation: 1–10 MHz
Measurement uncertainty: SOS 0.2% (k=2); BUA 2% (k=2)
Temperature characteristics: Standard 25℃ reference data, supports variable temperature calibration from 15–35℃

(1) KSG-1 type (rectangular shape)
It is a general model KSG-1 type, with an overall rectangular shape. The dimensions in three directions are 4cm, 5cm, and 6cm respectively. It is used for wet (water-immersed) ultrasonic bone densitometers without coupling pads or with liquid-filled coupling pads. It is used to test the accuracy of sound velocity (SOS) and broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) measurement. It also comes with temperature-dependent SOS and BUA test certificates. The technical parameters provided for rectangular specimens include a fitting formula for the relationship between material group velocity SOS and temperature when the center frequency is 500kHz; the other three are the fitting formulas for BUA and temperature in the three directions of 40mm, 50mm, and 60mm respectively.
(2) KSG-2 type (tetrahedral prism shape)
It is a double-surface wedge-shaped body, a customized model (with a coupling pad adapted to the ultrasonic probe). It is used for dry ultrasonic bone densitometers with a surface coupling pad. It is used to test the accuracy of sound velocity (SOS) and broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA). It has a rectangular shape with a larger base and a smaller top, and two flat and two sloping sides. It couples with the coupling pad of the inspected equipment through the surface, and the angle is complementary to the coupling pad.
(3) KSG-4 type (rectangular shape)
It has an overall rectangular shape, with dimensions of 4cm, 5cm, and 6cm in three directions. It is calibrated for slightly low sound velocity (medium sound velocity) SOS.
(4) KSG-5 type (rectangular shape)
It has an overall rectangular shape, with dimensions of 4cm, 5cm, and 6cm in three directions. It is calibrated for lower sound velocity (low sound velocity) SOS.
Please note: To ensure the accuracy of the values of such specimens and their long service life, they should be stored in a dry and light-proof environment. Do not wipe or immerse them with organic solvents such as ethanol or acetone.
